Meskel is one of Ethiopia’s most colorful religious festivals, celebrating the finding of the True Cross. The highlight is the Demera bonfire ceremony, where a large pyramid of branches is decorated with daisies and set alight.
In South Wollo, the celebration includes processions, traditional music, and community feasts. The festival takes place on September 27th each year.
